September 10, 2015 Migration and International Transfer of Knowledge
Event description:
Most immigration studies paint a simplified picture of one-way migration from Turkey to Germany. The real story of migration between the two nations, as key migration partners, is a more complex circular one. People and ideas are exchanged in both directions. In fact, two million Turks returned to Turkey from Germany over the last half century. A crucial turning point came in 2005, when for the first time, Turkish emigration back to Turkey surpassed immigration to Germany. Simultaneously, Turkey experienced an incredible development boom in the early 2000s. Increased foreign direct investment and establishment of Turkish offices by leading international companies like Siemens and SAP created new roles for returnees. Our panelists will analyze this important migration trend, consider its effect on Turkey’s economic boom, and address related questions such as: Does Germany face a reverse brain drain scenario? Under what circumstances is knowledge really mobile? What relationship will Turkey and Germany share in the future?
